Pinacoteca Civica

Officially opened on the 4th of August 1861, on the eve of the patron saint of city Sant’Emidio, in merit of two artist  from Ascoli Piceno Giorgio Paci (1820-1914) and Giulio Gabrielli (1832-1910) the conspicuous artistic collection with more than 800 objects currently on show  are located in the grand palazzo Arringo. The two first organizers obtained works of art from monasteries of Sant’Angelo Magno, San Domenico and from the Gesuiti after they had become properties of the council after the religious orders had been suppressed by a law of the prefect Valerio in 1861.

The collection became richer in 1909 with 12000 prints and designs given by Giulio Gabrielli; in 1917 with the arrival of numerous 18th century works of art donated by Gallery of Modern Art of Rome, in 1920 with the purchase of “legato” Ceci,  (a collection of more than 100 paintings, sculptures and ceramics left by the surgeon Antonio Ceci to his home town) and therefore with the numerous paintings purchased by various local administrations up to today. Among the precious works of art stands out for its importance the Piviale of the 13th century English handmade, donated in 1288 to the Duomo of Ascoli Piceno by Pope Nicolo IV, the paintings of Carlo Crivelli (two trittici of Valle Castellana, 15th century) Cola dell’Amatrice (La salita al Calvario 1527), Tiziano (San Francesco riceve le stigmate, 16th century), Guido Reni (Annun ciazione, 1575), Strozzi, De Ferrari, Magasco, Mancini, Morelli, Palizzi and Pellizza da Volpedo (Passeggiata amorosa, 1901).

The works of art are located in splendid hall all furnished in rare consoles, sofas, mirrors and chests of drawers all of the 18th and 19th century. This aristocratic building with its luscious curtains and Murano lamps is the magic atmosphere of these works of art.
